Abstract

In this speech, Mississippi Governor Ross R. Barnett firmly denounces the integration of schools. He differentiates between principles and expediency, declaring that integration is a matter of principles. He maintains that integration threatens “racial integrity”, and that it is crucial that the choice of whether or not to integrate falls into the hands of statewide government rather than federal government. He concludes by invoking patriotism, faith and history, characterizing integration as a threat to liberty, piety, and justice.
