Abstract

Eli Hochstedler outlines his unsuccessful attempt to attend services with Mickey Ware and Pat Matthews at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jackson, Mississippi. They did not enter the church because of the presence of many city police officers, who were scattered near the building and on nearby streets. Given the recent arrest of three female Tougaloo College students who attempted to integrate a Jackson church, Hochstedler, Ware, and Matthews were wary of the police presence and did not try to physically enter Trinity Lutheran. The policemen seemed to know who the men were; a police car followed their vehicle all the way to Jackson's northern city limits when they left.
