Abstract

In this telegram to prominent civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, author Robert T. Ashmore informs Hamer of an upcoming closed meeting among the members of the House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Elections.  Ashmore, the chairperson of the subcommittee, explained that the meeting would concern elections held in Mississippi that Hamer and other civil rights activists had alleged were unfairly held.  The meeting would allow legislators to decide whether to dismiss the case or not on the grounds that the contests had systematically disenfranchised African-American voters.
