Abstract

Lois Chaffee of the Council of Federated Organizations' (COFO) Community Centers Program writes this letter to a certain Dr. Riley in May of 1964. In the letter, Chaffee explained that COFO would be implementing a private health education program in 17 locations in Mississippi, including one in Hinds County, that coming summer. The health program was designed as a series of informal classes about prenatal care, infant care, sanitation and available public health services, and sought to identify and train locals to continue to teach classes on a permanent basis. Chaffee informed Dr. Riley that COFO representatives would meet with him soon to provide more information about the program, which was aimed at improving health services for African-Americans.
