Abstract

In this letter from the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), author Bob Moses invited Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) member Julian Bond to attend a briefing on June 3, 1964 regarding the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project. Among the attendees would be lawyers, Mississippi field workers, and COFO representatives who planned to discuss their experiences in Mississippi and outline ways to avoid violence during the summer project. Moses expressed concerns about possible violence that could arise from the project, based on past experiences in Mississippi. Moses emphasized a proactive approach to avoiding violence, noting that the organization was attempting to ensure a federal presence in Mississippi to stop problems before they arose, but acknowledged the possibility that violence would occur anyway, and stressed the need to be prepared for such an eventuality.
