1965-1968 -- The Fragmenting of the Civil Rights Movement: Ideological Differences Destroy Fragile Unity

Despite advances in legislation enacted with the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, existing ideological tensions began to fragment and eventually destroyed the fragile unity of the Civil Rights Movement.

  • 1965  President Lyndon Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act into law.
  • 1965  Malcolm X is assassinated.
  • 1965  Racial tensions exploded in Los Angeles, California with a six-day long Watts Riots killing 34 people and injuring 2,032.
  • 1966  Stokely Carmicheal and Willie Ricks use the slogan "Black Power" for the first time as a strategy to organize African Americans in order to gain political power and control over their communities.
  • 1966  Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seals form the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California.
  • 1967  Thurgood Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court, the first African American to serve in this position.
  • 1968  Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated.
